(Liberty Bell) – Sen. Richard Burr, the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, really got himself in a pickle this week after it was revealed that he dumped a significant amount of stock after attending coronavirus briefings and singaling a warning to the Tar Heel Club about the threat posed by the potentially lethal coronavirus.
Just how much trouble is he in right now? Well, Fox News host Tucker Carlson has called on Burr to resign from office after the incident, accusing him of insider trading.
The main allegation against Burr at the moment is that he said one thing to the public, while doing another in private. He told the American people there was nothing to worry about economically and that the president and Congress were working to ensure things stayed strong, but then sold off his stock, possibly due to receiving inside information.
Here’s more from Breitbart:
“You may have seen news reports this afternoon that chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee sold more than a million dollars in stock in mid-February after learning about how devastating the Chinese coronavirus could be. He had inside information about what could happen to our country, which is now happening,” Carlson said. “But he didn’t warn the public. He didn’t give a primetime address. He didn’t go on television to sound the alarm. He didn’t even disavow an op-ed he’d written just 10 days before claiming America was “better prepared than ever for coronavirus.”
“He didn’t do any of those things,” he continued. “Instead, what did he do? He dumped his shares in hotel stocks so he wouldn’t lose money, and then he stayed silent. Maybe there is an honest explanation for what he did. If there is, he should share it with the rest of us immediately. Otherwise, he must resign from the Senate and face prosecution for insider trading. There is no greater moral crime than betraying your country in a time crisis, and that appears to be what happened.”
Just imagine knowing that a building had a bomb in it and was going to blow up and kill everyone in it and then telling authorities that everything with the building was fine and there was nothing to worry about, all the while you’re moving the stuff from your apartment out the backdoor.
That’s essentially what Burr has done here, only with economic matters. He’s abused his position to get himself further ahead and is allowing other citizens to suffer instead. It’s despicable.
Burr absolutely needs to step down immediately and issue a public apology for abusing the power the American people entrusted him with. When the people of this country elect a leader, we do so trusting the folks we put in office will act with integrity and honor.
When they violate this trust, it’s egregious and a betrayal of the people they are supposed to serve. It’s time for Burr to own up to his choices and pay the piper.
