Busted: Why The Founder Of This Never Trump Super PAC Just Got Arrested (Hint: It Involves A $60 Million Scheme)

(Liberty Bell) – Uh-oh.

Someone is in trouble.

The founder of a top Republican PAC which opposes President Donald Trump’s bid for re-election was arrested on Tuesday as part of a public corruption probe.

Matthew Borges was arrested in connection with a year-long, $60 million federal primary scheme in which, according to prosecutors, Borges and three others allegedly conspired to secure a bailout for an Ohio-based energy company.

Borges, a lobbyist and former chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, and his cohorts were working with the Republican Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives to secure a $1.3 billion taxpayer bailout for FirstEnergy Solutions.

According to law enforcement, in exchange for helping FirstEnergy to land the bailout, a nonprofit the Speaker controlled received $60 million.

The bailout in question was meant to prevent the shutdown of two nuclear power plants.

Breitbart explains that “To what extent Borges played a role in the alleged scheme remains uncertain. Prosecutors have yet to announce formally the full scale of the indictment. As the Dayton Daily News reported, however, Borges was registered as a lobbyist for FirstEnergy as of last year.”

While news of arrests over the scheme made national headlines, interestingly, the media downplayed Borges’ work, focusing only on his past chairmanship of the Ohio Republican Party.

Last month, Borges teamed up with former White House Communications Director, Anthony Scaramucci, in launching Right Side PAC. This super PAC aimed to appeal to GOP voters who had voted Trump in 2016 but may be considering voting for Biden over dissatisfaction with his job performance.

In June Axios reported that the group would be drawing attention to “Biden’s record on free trade, states’ rights, federal spending, and respecting U.S. diplomatic and military alliances … to make the case that most anti-Trump Republicans can feel comfortable supporting him.”

“We want to take an opportunity to kind of reset things,” Borges told Axios. “And the first way to do that is cut out the cancer and start rebuilding… We’re not trying to become Democrats.”

Breitbart also notes:

It is unclear if the PAC will continue operation now that Borges has been arrested in connection with the alleged kickback scheme. Right Side PAC did not return requests for comment on this story.
